Abelard Embracing Heloise; Roman de la Rose, about 1405. 12th-century French love affair: abbess and scholar Héloïse d'Argenteuil and her lover, philosopher, ltheologian and poet Peter Abelard. They married in secret, (right), but were discovered. Abelard's punishment was to be castrated.
