Initial D: Zacchaeus and Christ; Stammheim Missal, probably 1170s. Additional Info:Within the curling tendrils of an initial D, Christ extends a scroll to Zacchaeus. According to Saint Luke's gospel, Zacchaeus was a wealthy tax collector who climbed into a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he entered Jericho. After meeting Jesus, he donated half his worldly goods to the poor.
