Saint John on the Island of Patmos; Book of Hours, about 1440-1450. John was banished to Patmos by the Roman authorities during the reign of the emperor Domitian, where he wrote the book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament. God looks down as St. John uses a quill pen to write on a scroll, while a devil steals his inkwell.
