Princess Louise's wedding gifts, 1871. Royal wedding of Princess Louise (fourth daughter of Queen Victoria) and her husband John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll. 'Locket given by the Princess to each of her Bridesmaids. Bible and Casket given to the Princess by the Maidens of England. Bracelet given to the Princess by the Bridesmaids...The locket given by her Royal Highness to the bridesmaids was manufactured by Messrs. London and Ryder. Its design was assisted by sketches made by the Princess herself...These lockets were worn by the eight bridesmaids during the wedding ceremony on Tuesday...The Bible and casket...were prepared by Messrs. Houghton and Gunn, of Bond-street, from designs specially furnished by Mr. G. R. Clarke. The illuminations on the edges of the book, and on the vellum leaves, in the style of the twelfth century, are by Mr. P. Harkiss. The oak casket was carved by Messrs. Ratlee and Kett, of Cambridge. This beautiful and appropriate gift was presented to her Royal Highness by Miss May Layard, daughter of the Rev. C. Clement Layard, of Fortismere, Muswell-hill'. From "Illustrated London News", 1871.
