The brightly colored clothing and swift movements of the soldiers contrast with the somber attire and stationary figure of Christ himself, who projects a passive mood of calm acceptance. The image is the first in a series of depictions of the Passion of Christ that accompanies a sequence of prayers devoted to the same subject.
