If she be unequal to the severe dignity of the classical Medea, she, nevertheless, shines in the display of motherly emotion. In this respect Miss Bateman has had several opportunities of displaying the tendency of her genius. Children bore an important part in the dramas of "Leah" and "Mary Warner," and are but repeated in "Medea." Our Illustration represents the actress in her most striking pose. Finding that the sons of Jason are affectionately inclined towards his new wife, Medea's indignation knows no bounds, and she throws herself into an attitude of almost insupportable agony.
