Hurstmonceux Castle, Sussex, 1872. 'Four or five miles north of Pevensey, across the Level, is the village of Hurstmonceux [ie Herstmonceux], with the remains of another old castle, founded by Waleran de Monceux, from whose descendants it passed to the Fiennes, who became the Lords Dacre. More recently the manor belonged to Dr. Hare, Bishop of Chichester; and one of his family, Archdeacon Hare, was rector of the parish church. The grand gateway, with its two towers 84ft. high, is the best part of Hurstmonceux Castle'. From "Illustrated London News", 1872.
