Portrait of Anna Jadwiga Zamoyska, 1791. Additional Info: This beautiful, large-scale portrait shows Anna Jadwiga Zamoyska, a Polish aristocrat at the age of nineteen. She is depicted with delicate features and large, expressive eyes. Her hair is curled in a manner fashionable at the time, yet she is dressed in a classical costume rather than in a contemporary garment. This drawing was made by Angelica Kauffman in 1791 --at the height of her Roman career-- in preparation for a family portrait that was commissioned by Anna Jadwiga’s father, count Andrzej Zamoysk, during the family’s extended visit to Italy. Typical of Kauffman’s practice in the 1790s, she used black chalk on gray prepared paper to record the likeness of the young woman.
