On the Senne, Brussels, 1872. 'The city, which has a population of more than 300,000, including its suburbs, is divided into the upper, or New Town, and the lower, or Old Town, being partly built on a hill, 220 ft. above the sea-level, partly on flat ground, through which a muddy little river, called the Senne, winds its course, making four small islands along the western side'.
