'Lord Allenby Entering Jerusalem', c1929. 'Allenby, the liberator of Palestine...captured Jerusalem at the end of 1917. He then proceeded to clear the whole of Palestine of the Turks - a task which occupied several months. His final great offensive began in September, 1918, and by the end of that month the Turkish army was destroyed and the conquest of the Holy Land completed'. The British Army in the Middle East: Edmund Allenby officially proclaimed martial law following the fall of Jerusalem on 9 December 1917. From "Heroic Deeds of Great Men", by C.
