'She Yielded a Quantity of Precious Stones', c1929. 'Proceeding to Valparaiso, [Francis Drake] helped himself liberally to the good things he found, including a certain quantity of fine gold...Following the coast he heard news of a ship bound for Panama laden with silver and gold, and came up with her at Cape Francisco. She is said to have yielded eighty pounds of gold and twenty-six tons of silver, thirteen chests of money and a quantity of jewels and precious stones, valued at £200,000. After taking other prizes [his ship] the "Golden Hind" reached England on September 26, 1580, to quote Stowe, "very richly freight with gold, silver, silk, pear and precious stones".'
