'Subduing The Matabele', c1929. 'The approach of the rainy season convinced [Leander Starr] Jameson that he must act without loss of time. He called for volunteers, and they were immediately enrolled and organized. He asked for horses, and [Cecil Rhodes, the Empire Builder] sent him 900. With a force that at no time exceeded 900 men, Jameson entered Matabeleland and fought two battles at a disadvantage of one to ten, in both of which the Matabele were defeated with heavy losses'. The British in Africa, 1893. From "Heroic Deeds of Great Men", by C. Sheridan Jones and Alfred Miles, illustrated by Howard Davie and Harry Payne [Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, London, c1929]
