General Tom Thumb, a popular stage performer of very small stature, 1844. A top hat is included in the engraving to provide a perspective on his size. Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883), known by his stage name General Tom Thumb, was an American with dwarfism who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer P. T. Barnum.
