Our special artist's voyage to the Gold Coast - Sunday morning on board the Volta, 1873. 'Our Special Artist, Mr. Melton Prior, who has been sent by the proprietors of this Journal to the Gold Coast of West Africa, for the purpose of making sketches to illustrate the campaign under Sir Garnet Wolseley against the Ashantees...sailed from Liverpool on the 6th, in the screw steam-ship Volta...Our Correspondent praises in high terms the accommodation on board the Volta, the quality of the provisions, and the obliging behaviour of all the officers of that ship, from the captain downwards... The subject of Mr. Prior's sketch is the chaplain reading prayers on Sunday morning, the 9th November, to the congregation of officers and passengers on the quarter-deck of the Volta. It is hoped that their fellow-countrymen and fellow-Christians at home will not forget, in the Sunday prayers of England and Scotland, to remember those who have gone out, at the risk of health or life in the pestilential climate of Guinea, to serve the British empire and the progress of human civilisation'.
