The late Dr. Nélaton, French surgeon, 1873. Engraving from a photograph by M. Reutlinger. 'The eminent French surgeon, Auguste Nélaton, died, on Sunday, in Paris; he had been some time dangerously ill, and his death was announced by mistake a few weeks ago. He was born in 1807, was a pupil of Dupuytren, attained the degree of Doctor in 1836, and was created successively Surgeon of the Hospitals and Fellow of the Faculty of Medicine. In April, 1851, he became Professor of Clinical Surgery, and in 1867 received the title of Honorary Professor. Dr. Nélaton was appointed surgeon to the Emperor in 1866, Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1867, and Senator in 1868. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences. It will be remembered how he detected the position of the bullet in the wound of Garibaldi's foot after the skirmish at Aspromonte in 1862. The late Mr. Richard Partridge, who also attended the case, thought no bullet was there; but Nélaton was right'. From "Illustrated London News", 1873.
