Archibald Campbell, Earl and Marquis of Argyll, 17th century Scottish statesman. The chief of Clan Campbell, Campbell was effectively the ruler of Scotland during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms between 1639 and 1651. He was the leader of the Covenanter movement that fought for Presbyterianism and Scottish interests generally in the English Civil War.
