'Dante and Virgil in Hell', 1850. The alchemist Capocchio is attacked by Gianni Schicchi de' Cavalcanti, who impersonated the dead Buoso Donati to claim his inheritance. They are punished for being imposters. Scene from Italian poet Dante Alighieri's "Divina Commedia" ("Divine Comedy". Dante (1265-1321) was a great admirer of the Roman poet Virgil, and in his "Divine Comedy", Virgil accompanies him through Purgatory and Inferno. From a private collection.
