The Arrival of Saint John on Patmos; Dyson Perrins Apocalypse, about 1255-1260. Additional Info:After Saint John miraculously survived being thrown in a cauldron of burning oil by the Emperor Domitian, the Emperor exiled him to the island of Patmos. Here one of Domitian's men pushes the saint from the boat. The green of the water extends completely around the abstractly rendered island, emphasizing John's complete seclusion. The illuminator expressed John's reluctance by having him look back over his shoulder as he is pushed forward.
