Queen Dido Killing Herself with a Sword; Roman de la Rose, about 1405. Dido was the legendary founder and first queen of the Phoenician city-state of Carthage. Heartbroken at being left by her lover Aeneas, Dido ascends the funeral pyre, and falls on a sword that Aeneas had given her.
