The Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket; Book of Hours, about 1430-1440. Assassination of the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170. Soldiers slice off the top of Becket's head before killing him. Holy oil, also called chrism, is used to anoint the head during the ordination of a priest in the Catholic Church.
