Saint John the Baptist; Gualenghi-d'Este Hours, about 1469. Additional Info: The prophet Saint John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin, wears a camel's hair shirt as a sign of his asceticism. A scroll above him reads: Ecce Agnus Dei Q[ui] T[ollis] P[eccata] M[undi] (Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world). John the Baptist is the first of more than twenty-five saints listed in the Suffrages, a section of prayers invoking the saints' aid.
